Balasana, the baby pose

September 20, 2011

The baby position is your great ally for those moments of stress in which you need to get in touch with your internal vitality. Balasana or baby posture, reminds us of the position in which the fetus during gestation in the womb, although it is also a position of surrender, where we surrender the mind and its agitated activity to mother earth so that she can restore serenity to us. Therefore, when you practice it, what you will find is interiorization, emotional calm, the mind becomes receptive and rebalance the energies. How do you get into the pose? First, sit on your heels and bend your trunk forward, leaving it relaxed, and remain with your forehead resting on the ground in front of your knees (if your forehead does not reach the ground, you can place a cushion to make it easier for you). To undo the posture, all you have to do is place your hands on the ground just in front of your shoulders, once there, slowly bring your back up to vertical. On Balasana or baby pose, you will feel how your back widens and relaxes all the way to the sacrum. It is a good time to bring your awareness to the back of the waist and the rib cage, directing the inhalations in that direction, so that through breathing the back and lower back can release tension. A variant The one frequently used in Kundalini Yoga is to extend the arms out in front with the hands joined in a prayer mudra. Here you will notice a greater widening of the rib cage and consequently a greater opening of the heart. Satnam, Irune
