Yogic Diet: Eat the right foods to nourish your spirit

Jan 04, 2011

The Yogic Diet (Anna Yoga) is an essential aspect of our daily Yoga practice and represents one of the five Yoga Principles. In order to fully benefit from everything that Yoga offers you, it is highly recommended to feed your body and soul to stay alert and energetic during the day, and achieve spiritual and emotional balance by redefining your relationship with food. In general, make sure you eat a balanced diet, always eat in moderation, practice the Three Gunas, eat a proper organic diet, fast and modify your dietary patterns. The Three Gunas: According to Yogic Philosophy, the entire universe responds to the balance between three basic qualities or Gunas. Once the energy of the universe takes shape, one of these three qualities dominates it. In the fruits, for example, we find that some are ripe (sattvic), others ripening (rajasic) and others overripe (tamasic). The sattvic diet is the purest of them; feed the body and purify the mind bringing you closer to perfect health. Eat an appropriate organic diet: It is not enough to have an active life, it is also necessary to have a correct diet. Although the concept of "proper diet" has different connotations for different people, make sure that your body receives the necessary nutrients through a diet based on the Three Gunas. Following a diet of this type, your digestive system will process food more easily and you will also contribute to the preservation of the environment. Modify your diet patterns: Modifying the basics of your diet can be quite a challenge, especially if you have been accustomed to a specific diet for many years. However, this transition can be made easier if you make it with determination and knowledge. Start by increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables to finally switch to a pure vegetarian diet that will help strengthen your body and purify your mind. Fast: This practice has been used for thousands of years as a method to cleanse and rejuvenate the body, allowing your digestive system to recover from excesses and rid itself of toxins. To begin with, you can fast for a single day based on water or juices, although the real benefits will be received after fasting for three days: increased physical and mental strength, improved concentration and enrichment of the senses. It is very important that when you break your fast, you do so with fruit and overnight, allowing your body to process food while you sleep. By following all these recommendations together with an appropriate Yoga practice, you will be able to nourish your body and spirit with the Yogic Diet.
