Goloka, the world of cows

Aug 16, 2018

Etymology

In Sanskrit language, Goloka means "the world of cows". The Sanskrit word go refers to cows, and loka translates as planet, world, or place.

What is it?

Goloka is the eternal abode of the god Krishna, according to some Vaishnava (Krishnaist) groups. This information is presented in the Brahma-samhita (XNUMXth century AD) and the Bhagavata-purana (XNUMXth century AD). In most of the text of the Bhágavata-purana, Krishna is presented as the cosmic Vishnu, the powerful god under whom all the other divinities work. Instead in the tenth canto he is portrayed as the supreme person who gives rise to Vishnu, and who resides in his personal abode Goloka. He describes Goloka as the highest loka (planet or place) of the Vaikunthá planets for the devotees of Krishna, who is known there only as the protector of the cows, which are therefore found in abundance on that planet. He is also referred to as Goloka Vrindavan, or simply Vrindavan. It is a land of plenty, richness and natural beauty, like a Garden of Eden. In Goloka, Krishna resides with Radharani, his eternal consort, and countless other devotees, with whom he performs his divine activities and pastimes, known as līlā.
