the tingshas?
The Tingshas: the pure sound
The Tibetan term
Ting refers to the ringing sound of metal; it also means bronze or silver metal bell offered on a Buddhist altar. The term
S means hung or suspended. Thus Ting-sha takes the meanings of suspended cymbals of sonorous metal and that of a sustained musical note. Linked by a leather strap or chain, the cymbals gently and lightly touch at their edges creating a soft or loud tone, a clear, sustained, sharp, clean and penetrating sound. Their size varies from about 2,5 to 4 inches in diameter. They are of a thick thickness, just like the Tibetan bowls, they are made of an alloy of metals that produce harmonic sounds.
EThe use of the Tingshas
the tibetan bells
tingshas are used by Buddhist practitioners in
religious songs and rituals. Its origin dates back to the shamanic Bön religion, a religion that was born from Tibetan Buddhism.
The Tingshas are also used in ceremonies of
healing or sanitation of spaces. The sound of the Tingshas can create a resonant field that cleanses spaces of negative energies. They are often used in Feng Shui to close off the four corners of a room and balance a space. Today, the Tingsha is widely used in conjunction with Tibetan bowls for healing with
music-therapy. Many times, it is used to define the beginning and end of a period of time.
meditation. By striking one bell against the other, an intense and pure sound is created that allows the mind to focus. In order to reproduce a clear and harmonic sound, hold each cymbal by the cord, forming a 90 degree angle between the hole where the cord enters and your hand, both cymbals at the same time. Hold firmly, and tap the edges together. Let the Tingsha ring into silence.
