The ancient masala chai, which literally means spiced tea, is surrounded by tales of royalty and herbal medicine. It is said that more than 5000 years ago the emperors of India drank a spice-based concoction to keep themselves alert at court. This drink had no caffeine and was used in Ayurveda. It was not until 1835 that with the arrival of the British and the tea plantations, the leaves of this plant were introduced.

Although the production and export of tea in India were high, the consumption of tea was too expensive for the common person in India.
Over time, however, vendors began to use leftover tea leaves, which, infused with milk, sugar, and spices, would make a potent brew at low cost. This is the first appearance of the masala chai that we all know today.

What ingredients are used to make chai tea?

Masala chai tea is a combination of spices added to black tea to create a unique flavor. The advantage of making chai tea at home is that you can decide which species you want according to your tastes and taste, add or remove ingredients.

Clove: with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, adds earthy notes.
Green cardamom: also antioxidant, adds a sweet fragrance to your homemade chai tea.
Black peppercorns: for a spicy touch, as well as being anti-inflammatory and aiding digestion and nutrient absorption.
Fennel seeds: It has digestive and soothing properties. They give chai tea a subtle cooling effect in the mouth.
Cinnamon: It is a powerful ingredient that regulates blood sugar levels and adds natural sweetness and warmth to your homemade chai tea.
Powdered ginger: anti-inflammatory, stimulates the immune system and improves digestion. This root will give that hot, spicy depth to your concoction.
Nutmeg: It is said to relieve pain, improve digestion and blood circulation. Nutmeg has an aroma with sweet and citrus nuances.
Red chilli: if you like your tea very spicy, you can add a few chilli flakes in your mixture.

How to make chai tea at home?

As for the recipe for making chai and the exact proportions, we prefer to leave it up to you. Experiment and try until you find the formula that most fascinates you.
Simply mix all the ingredients in a processor, blender or in a mortar until you get a kind of powder (it does not have to be very fine since you can filter it when serving it).



Store the mixture in a tightly closed jar and always use a clean, dry spoon. As you will realize, it is very convenient to have the mixture already prepared, however, we recommend not to do too much since it is very possible that the mixture will lose power and flavor over time.

How to use homemade chai tea mix?

Put water in a pot. When it is boiling, add a teaspoon of masala chai. If you drink it with milk, it is time to add the desired amount. Let it boil three or four more minutes. Remove from heat and add a bag of black tea. Cover the pot and let it sit for ten minutes.
You can strain it to avoid species particles in the cup.
Add to your taste and stir well the honey or sugar. You can do this when it's in the pot or once it's served.
