Discover yogic breathing or complete breathing

January 31, 2017

In India, it is often said that the length of a person's life is predetermined by the number of breaths he will take throughout his life. The slower and deeper we learn to breathe, the longer and better we will live. Today, we talk to you about Pranayama and we invite you to discover the yogic breathing or complete breathing.

Breathing in Yoga

Our breathing rhythms our life, It is the first and most important physiological function of the body. All other functions of the body depend on it. We come into this world with a first breath and we will leave this world with a last breath. Breathing is the bridge between the physical body and the mind. Through the practice of Yoga we can act on the movement and distribution of prana in the body and influence vital signs and brain activity. In this way, when the breath becomes slower and deeper, the mind calms down.
If you can calm your breathing, your emotions will also calm, thus restoring balance to your life energy.

Pranayama, the art of breathing

Prana can be translated as vital energy or as breath, while yama translates as regulation, control or mastery. Therefore, we can conclude that Pranayama is the science or art that teaches the set of techniques to control breath and energy. The sound "a" of ayama is also interpreted as expansion, so we can understand that pranayama it also means expansion of vital energy.

Pranayama, control of the mind

What we seek with Pranayama is to control the prana, by regulating the rhythm of breathing and, through the control of the prana, to control the fluctuations of the mind. If the prana is balanced and can move freely through the channels, we feel healthy and vital. If the prana is blocked, we feel sick or irritated. Prana energizes all the faculties of the body. The consequence is that in order to control all our faculties the key is the control of prana.
Quality of Breath = Quality of Thoughts
Today, YogaYe invites you to discover yogic breathing or complete breathing.
types of breathing
These are the three types of breathing:
  • clavicle breathing (short),
  • chest breathing (half)
  • y abdominal breathing (deep).
Complete yogic breathing combines all three types of breathing.

Complete yogic breathing

La full breath, or breath andóguica, is a Pranayama technique that fuses the three types of breathing (abdominal, thoracic, and clavicular), taking advantage of all of our lung capacity. It is usually practiced before an asana session or also at the beginning and at the end of Pranayama, concentration and meditation practices. It is very beneficial in times of fatigue, tension or mental dispersion. During the execution of the complete breath, the inspiration process is carried out in 3 times, following the sequence abdomen - thorax - clavicle. On exhalation, the same 3-phase pattern is fulfilled, in reverse. Below you will find how to perform this breath.
Technique: How to perform full breath?
In a lying or sitting position, with one hand on the abdomen and the other on the side (optional):
  • Exhale completely.
  • Inhale filling the abdomen first, letting it expand naturally.
  • Keep inhaling and feel the chest area expand (ribs open).
  • When the chest is full, inhale a little more by lifting the collarbones and chest.
  • Hold your breath for a few moments (relaxing your shoulders and face), and then proceed with the exhalation process.
  • Release the air from the lungs starting at the top (clavicular area), then the rib cage, and finally the abdominal area.
  • Let the lungs remain empty for a few moments, before restarting.
  • Exhale in the reverse order. First relaxing the clavicles and letting the chest drop, then contracting the rib cage a little more until the lungs are completely emptied. Finally relax the abdomen.
Benefits of full breathing
The practice of complete breathing is a classic exercise of Yoga, which facilitates the processes of relaxation and concentration; In addition, it promotes inner peace and mental clarity; and enhances the ability of self-control. If we learn to breathe consciously by applying a long and deep breath, our life will expand, we will increase our health, we will be happier and we will be calmer.
If there is prana in the body, there is Life.
