Dharana: Memory and Concentration

September 14, 2011

There are many yoga techniques that stimulate the brain and nervous system to improve memory and concentration. Dharana, the sixth branch of yoga, is a state of focused attention used during asana (posture), pranayama (breath control), and meditation. Dharana trains the mind to be clear, focused and concentrated. In asana, using a drishti (look at the dot), especially in balance positions, improves mental focus. Postures of lengthening, of the spine, flexions forwards and backwards activate the spine and stimulate the nervous system. Inverted postures feed the brain by increasing the circulation of blood and oxygen.

In pranayama, the mind focuses on the breath as it flows in and out of the body. Oxygen and prana (vital energy) are also increased in the body and brain by regulation of breathing. Therefore, it increases concentration as well as increases circulation in the brain.

Meditation is a step further in Dharana, requiring even more intense attention and concentration. The practice of meditation by itself or in conjunction with asanas and pranayama works without altering the mind, thus reducing excessive thinking. Overthinking consumes mental energy and clouds the mind from seeing and thinking clearly. Meditation on the sixth chakra or third eye activates the brain, as well as focuses the mind.

Asana, Pranayama and Meditation are powerful tools that stimulate the brain and improve the power of the mind. Applying these concepts to your daily practice, you will feel how your energy level improves remarkably!

Try it for a week and tell us your result!

Namaste!
Nina
